Former Doncaster Rovers striker Billy Sharp scored twice for Southampton to condemn Rovers to their third defeat in a week.

Sharp left Rovers to join Southampton in January after netting 41 goals for the club in two and a half seasons and he came back to haunt his old club.

The striker headed Southampton ahead from close range close to the hour and he doubled the lead with just fifteen minutes remaining when he brushed off the challenge of Habib Beye to fire past Carl Ikeme.

Rovers best chance of the game came inside ten minutes when Frederic Piquionne headed over after a good ball from Simon Gillett.

The defeat leaves Rovers five points from safety with just eight games remaining.

They are back in action on Tuesday night when they play their rearranged game at Crystal Palace.
