Doncaster Rovers moved comfortably into the second round of the Carling Cup with a 3-0 win over Tranmere Rovers at the Keepmoat.

Rovers gave a first start to Kyle Bennett and Chris Brown made his first start since 2004, when he was on loan with the club, whilst their was a number of unfamiliar names on the substitutes bench.

There was also a surprise return to the bench for Paul Keegan who missed pre season through injury.

Chris Brown had the perfect start to his new Rovers career when he scored from the spot inside five minutes, after a foul on James Coppinger.

Ian Goodison had a good chance for the visitors but failed to hit the target from close range.

Brown then had a shot saved by Fon Williams as Rovers controlled the game.

Ryan Mason doubled the lead for Rovers on the half hour when he fired into the bottom right of the net from inside the area.

Fon Williams then saved another shot from Mason as Rovers looked to finish the game as a contest.

It was the last real chance of the half as Rovers deservedly went in at the break two up.

Bennett had an early second half chance for Rovers but his attempted lob failed, going straight into the arms of Fon Williams.

Simon Gillett scored two long-range efforts during pre season and he went close with a 25-yard effort that went just wide of the post.

Bakayogo had a great chance to get Tranmere back into the game when through on goal but Woods came out to deny the striker.

Gillett again went close for Rovers when Fon Williams eventually saved his headed attempt.

The game was over as a contest on the hour when Bennett scored his first goal for the club with a superb swerving shot that gave Fon Williams no chance.

A good night was spoiled, when Ryan Mason was stretchered off after a poor challenge, the third Rovers player to leave the game on a stretcher in two games.

Rovers looked like increasing their lead with Barnes twice going close and Coppinger shooting just wide.

A comprehensive win for Rovers but the injury to Mason put a dampener on what would have been a good night.

Rovers will find out their second round opponents when the draw is made on Sky Sports after the Sheffield Wednesday v Blackpool live game.
