Reading continued their long hoodoo over the Rovers when they inflicted only Rovers second home defeat of the season.
Rovers have now won just two games in nineteen games on home soil against the Berkshire club.
Matt Kilgallon made his debut for Rovers after signing on loan from Sunderland in midweek.
John Oster had an early chance for Rovers against one of his former clubs but his long range effort was saved by Federici.
Reading took the lead just short of the half hour with the first shot on target when Kebe played in Long and he stabbed the ball past Neil Sullivan.
The visitors had chances to double their lead before half time with Sullivan forced into a good save and Kebe and Long shooting wide.
Rovers had struggled to get their fluent football going during a first half played in windy conditions.
Billy Sharp had Rovers first chance of the second half but Federici saved his shot from distance.
Reading doubled their lead on 68 minutes when Kebe lobbed Neil Sullivan who was caught in no man`s land.
Brooker tried to get Rovers quickly back into the game but his header went wide of the post.
Rovers afternoon was summed up five minutes later when a clearance by Adam Lockwood was blocked by McAnuff and the ball flew into the back of the net.
The goal killed off any hope of a Rovers comeback and they only had efforts from Brooker and Woods in the final fifteen minutes on a disappointing afternoon at the Keepmoat.
