Iron Vs Rovers

Rovers made two changes from last weeks draw against Chesterfield. Lewis Guy and James Coppinger were dropped to the bench, with Dave Mulligan and new loan signing Ross McCormack coming in. Michael McIndoe was again named as the Rovers skipper. Anthony Griffiths was named on the bench, and Craig Nelthorpe travelled down with the first team. As expected, Steve Foster made his debut for Scunthorpe following his sudden departure from Belle Vue.

First Half

Had a nice cup of coffee. Not much of note happened in the first half. Thornton and Green both failed to get stuck-in.

Second Half

Scunthorpe made a change at the interval and the substitute scored with probably his first touch of the game. Blayney seemed to go down in stages, and I would guess that he was unsighted and the sun was in his eyes. Rovers were still struggling to get in to the game. Dave Penney then made an excellent change by replacing Mulligan with Coppinger. Some fans moaned about the change, wanting either Green or Thornton to be replaced. Jamie Coppinger made a great impression on the game, and on Barraclough!.

Crosby can think himself very lucky that the referee only showed him a yellow card when Heffernan was clean though. Rovers should have had a penalty, when McCormack was brought down. It was a cast Iron (pun intended) penalty.

The two Rovers goals were quality. The equaliser came from a long cross field ball and McIndoe volleyed home. For the winner, Graeme Lee struck the ball from 30 yards out and it few over the Scunny ‘keeper and into the back of the net.

The game finished with a 20 man brawl. Coppinger committed a bad foul on Barraclough and was rightly dismissed. Then Torpey, who had only just come on, decided that his contribution to the game would be to strike Copps and then, when the referee showed him the red card, he appeared to push the matchday official. Commenting after the match, Penney said that he wanted to be in the middle of the brawl and he said he was happy that the lads stood up for each other.

Summary

We didn’t play well today, but we got 3 points.

Foster was booed and jeered from start to finish and ended up reacting to the ‘Foster what’s the score’ chant at the end. Foster gained a bit of dignity by taking so long to react to the jeering, and not celebrating when they scored
