New Doncaster Rovers boss Dean Saunders has admitted to holding discussions with both Pascal Chimbonda and El-Hadji Diouf.

The experienced Premier League duo are both free agents after being released at the end of last season.

Chimbonda was in the crowd on Tuesday night as Rovers drew 1-1 with Hull City and Saunders admitted that they had been in discussions, when he said, “I spoke to him (Chimbonda) before the game and will speak to him afterwards. ‘I haven’t discussed the ins and outs but he’s obviously interested or he wouldn’t be here. To sign a player like him at this club would be brilliant. He’s gone for millions and millions in his career and it would be brilliant.
‘I will discuss with him what he wants to do. He looks fit and is a class player and if I could get him in he would make such a difference to the whole club.’

Saunders also admitted to holding talks with Diouf earlier in the week and feels that now other clubs have been alerted to his situation; it may scupper Rovers plans to sign him. ‘I’m hopeful it might happen. When it appeared on television yesterday I thought other clubs would have come out of the woodwork and it looks like that might have happened.
‘I did speak to him. I want to get some players in. Players like that don’t come around very often and if we do get them, they’ll be short-term, probably benefiting us and them,’ Saunders continued.

Saunders watched his side pick up another point on Tuesday night, making it four points in two games since he took charge at the weekend.

The point wasn`t enough to lift them off the foot of the championship table, although they are now just a point behind Bristol City in twenty-third place.

Rovers now get ready for a tough test at Peterborough United on Saturday, who have settled into life in the championship after winning promotion from League One last season.

Peterborough moved into the top half of the table on Tuesday night with a 3-2 win at Portsmouth.
