Doncaster Rovers boss Dean Saunders said a few harsh words at half time worked wonders as Rovers but behind them a dire first half performance to hit back and claim all three points against Brentford at the Keepmoat.

Rovers looked to be heading towards a fourth defeat of the season after Jonathan Douglas had given the visitors a deserved lead on the stroke of half time and Saunders says the players dug in to hit back in the second half and claim the points.

Speaking on Radio Sheffield, Saunders said, ‘It’s a great result for us, a great win. We have dug from somewhere and found the determination and the desire and a bit of class for the goals to get something out of that game when it’s probably the worst we’ve played first half all season but they were better than us.

‘I’ve said a few harsh words at half-time and we’ve come out and the players have reacted.

Saunders was hoping to reach the break all square but the goal from Douglas in the last minute of the half had Saunders fuming at his players during the half time break.

The Rovers boss had complained at his strikers lack of goals in midweek and asked them to step up to the plate and produce.

Midfielder David Cotterill is the clubs leading goalscorer so far this season and he scored his fifth of the season with another superb strike from outside the area.

Summer signing Billy Paynter then stepped off the bench to score his third goal of the season with a well-guided header and Saunders described bot goals as world class. “Dave Cotterill’s goal’s world class and Billy Paynter’s header’s world class,’added Saunders.

The win sets Rovers up nicely for a trip to table toppers Tranmere Rovers on Tuesday night, who lost for the first time this season 3-1 at Bournemouth.
