Coventry made their first visit to Doncaster in fifty six years and came away empty handed after a superb Richie Wellens strike gave Doncaster their first home win of the season.
Doncaster had to make one change to the side from last week with James Chambers replacing Gareth Roberts who has an ear infection. There was also good news with summer signing Darren Byfield being included on the bench for the first time after his operation during close season.
Coventry welcomed back keeper Kieren Westwood and forward Freddy Eastwood who both suffered injuries during last weekends defeat against Bristol City.
In a close fought out encounter Coventry had the best early chance when Eastwood put wide when in a good position.
Doncaster took the lead on the half hour when Wellens found himself with time and space 25 yards out and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top left hand corner of the net; which gave Westwood no chance in the Coventry goal.
Coppinger had a chance to make it two shortly afterwards but put the ball over the bar when in a good position.
Coventry finished the half strongly with a succession of corners, the sky Blues best chance fell to defender Scott Dann whose header was cleared off the line by Brian Stock.
Both sides continued to look for more goals in the second half, Clinton Morrison missed a good chance for Coventry when screwing wide when in a good position.
Lewis Guy then did similar at the other end after good work between Guy and Gareth Taylor made the opening for the inform Rovers striker.
The game continued to be end to end with no team able to provide that final bit of quality in front of goal.
Rovers had chances to increase the lead with Hayter, Taylor and Lockwood all putting wide of the target in the final 20 minutes.
At the other end Mckenzie headed at goal which produced a save from Sullivan.
Mifsud claimed a penalty for Coventry after going down under a challenge from Lockwood but the referee waved away his protests.
The final whistle blew to the relief of Rovers fans and three well earned points in an exciting game between two sides who wanted to play attacking football, only a fantastic strike from Doncaster`s midfield maestro Richie Wellens could separate the sides.
The result gives Rovers seven points out of twelve for the first month of the season and happily sitting in the top half of the table.
Only a late strike in Rovers previous home game against Cardiff stopped it being three wins from four and all at the club can be happy with the start Rovers have made to life in the Championship.
