Doncaster Rovers boss Darren Ferguson says it was a tough decision to put striker Andy Williams on the transfer list.

Williams was one of five players placed on the transfer list when Ferguson announced his released and retained list earlier this week.

The 30-year-old still had a year remaining on his current deal after joining the club from Swindon Town in the summer of 2015.

Ferguson, who is already busy building the squad for next season, admitted it was a tough decision to allow Williams to leave this summer.

“It was the most difficult one because his goalscoring record is good,” Ferguson told The Star.

“I had a good chat with Andy and he understands the reasons for it.

“I just feel we need a bit of improvement, certainly in that area.

“We need to keep getting better and it`s important we do that.

“That was a tough decision and we`ll see how that one goes.

“I`ve got to balance the books which comes into it slightly but this was definitely a footballing decision.”

Williams arrived at Doncaster after scoring 22 goals for Swindon in the 2014/15 season. In his first season at the Keepmoat, he scored 16 goals to despite Doncaster being relegated from League One.

This season Williams scored 12 goals, including the final game of the season at Hartlepool United, but he struggled to find his form after returning from injury in December. He scored just three times in 2017 with all three goals coming in the final month of the season.

Doncaster have also transfer listed Ross Etheridge, Cedric Evina, Gary McSheffrey and Mitchell Lund.

One Reply to “DRFC Ferguson – It Was A Tough Decision To Let Striker Leave”

  • I would have liked to have seen him stay. Definitey a 12-20 goals a season striker, which are not always easy to find. Strange that we could afford his wages in League Two but can’t in League One.
