Doncaster Rovers boss Darren Ferguson says the club are close to sorting out a new deal for John Marquis.

The striker enjoyed a successful first season at the Keepmoat Stadium following his arrival from Millwall last summer on a two-year deal.

Marquis netted 26 goals in League Two to finish the season as the joint leading goalscorer in the division with Barnet striker John Akinde.

A number of clubs have been linked with a move for Marquis after his impressive season but Doncaster are now working on a new deal for the 24-year-old and Ferguson believes the two parties are close to sorting out a new deal.

“We`re really close with it,” Ferguson told The Star.

“Negotiations have been going on for about a week.

“I`ve had a great chat with him on Monday.

“He`s had a great season, loved it. He really wants to stay.

“You`re always going to get a bit of interest in him.

“But it`s not an issue, we`ll get it done.

“It`s just a case of going through a couple more things with John.

“His was always going to take a bit longer but I`m 100 per cent confident we`ll get John done, no problem.”

Doncaster have already been quick to sort out deals this summer ahead of their return to League One next season.

Matty Blair, Liam Mandeville and Marko Marosi have signed new deals and Niall Mason has joined Doncaster on a permanent deal after a successful season on loan at the Keepmoat Stadium.

This week Doncaster announced their released list with five players departing and five more players placed on the transfer list.
