Doncaster Rovers boss Dean Saunders is hoping to sort out a deal with El Hadji Diouf today after the striker came to the end of his short-term deal yesterday.

Diouf played the last game of his short-term deal at Hull City on Tuesday night and helped Rovers gain a valuable point in a 0-0 draw.

The experienced Senegal international footballer agreed in principle to an 18 month contract with Rovers over the festive period but is yet to sign the deal and Saunders is hoping to sort out the deal today.

Speaking in the Sheffield Star, Saunders said, “I`m meeting with Dioufy and the chairman and we`re going to try to thrash a deal out for him.

“We`re competing against teams, like Hull, who have players from their Premiership days who are on big money. We scrap and scrap and scrap and we`ll keep doing that but you`ve got to have a bit of quality in your team, and Dioufy has that.”

The importance of Diouf staying is now even more important with the clubs leading goalscorer Billy Sharp leaving the club at the start of the week when he signed for Southampton.

With Sharp gone it also frees up some wages at the club and gives Rovers more opportunity to put a decent offer to Diouf. “He wants to stay with us, and it makes it a bit easier for us now because Billy`s left and we don`t have to pay his wages anymore and we got a transfer fee for him.

“Hopefully that will help us put an offer on the table for Dioufy that will keep him at Doncaster because he`s a quality player,” continued Saunders.

Diouf has made ten appearances for the club, scoring three goals since making his debut against Middlesbrough at the start of November.
