Doncaster Rovers boss Darren Ferguson felt it was an important win after winning at home for the first time this season in League One.

Doncaster came from behind to beat inform Southend United 4-1 at the Keepmoat Stadium, as they scored four times in twelve minutes including a ten-minute hat-trick from Ben Whiteman.

“It was an important win to get our first home win and it was thoroughly deserved,” Ferguson told BBC Radio Sheffield.

“I thought we were unfortunate to be behind but then we just blew them away.

“It was a solid team performance.”

Anthony Wordsworth headed the visitors ahead seven minutes before the break but John Marquis scored a crucial equaliser in first half stoppage time and Doncaster then blew away their opponents in the opening twelve minutes of the second half with three more goals.

Whiteman put Doncaster ahead two minutes after the break when he fired home after James Coppinger had seen his free-kick come back off the crossbar.

His second goal was the best of the game as he volleyed home from the edge of the area and he completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot after Alfie May had been fouled in the penalty area.

The win for Doncaster sees them jump above both Rochdale and Oldham Athletic in the table as they moved three points clear of the relegation zone.
