Struggling Bury bring Rovers run to an end

Doncaster Rovers suffered their first defeat on their travels since the beginning of September as struggling Bury claimed three crucial points in the battle against relegation.

The game always had a banana-skin look about it. Rovers were unbeaten in six and joint top of League One, and it had also been twelve games since they last suffered an away defeat.

Bury had gone twelve games in all competitions since their last win and had been in the relegation zone all season.

Chris Brown had an early chance to give Rovers the lead but Trevor Carson kept out his header.

Bury went ahead on 26 minutes when Andy Bishop headed past Gary Woods and it was doubled on 35 minutes when Nicky Ajose scored on his third debut for the club having signed from Peterborough United on loan in the week.

Rovers tried in vain in the second half to find a way back into the game. Defenders Jamie McCombe and Rob Jones both put good opportunities wide.

When Rovers did test Carson in the Bury goal there was no way past him, making a good finger tipped save from James Coppinger.

It was one of those days for Rovers with Jones missing another good chance and leading goalscorer David Cotterill also failing to hit the target.
