Billy Sharp scored the only goal of the game as Doncaster Rovers beat top of the table Southampton 1-0 at the Keepmoat.

Sharp was a summer transfer target of the saints and he showed what they missed out on with a superb finish on the hour.

Marc Antoine Fortune cut the ball back from the bye line and Sharp`s smart shot on the turn gave Kelvin Davis no chance in the Southampton goal.

It was top v bottom of the championship but it was hard to tell which side are top and which were bottom as Doncaster thoroughly deserved the three points.

Davis produced a good save to deny for Southampton midfielder Simon Gillett inside the opening five minutes and Herita Ilunga saw an effort cleared off the line.

For Southampton, Morgan Schneiderlin had the best chance but Rovers keeper Carl Ikeme saved from him after he had got in behind the Rovers defence.

The win was enough to move Rovers off the foot of the table and they are now four points from safety, with the four sides above them all losing.
