Doncaster Rovers lost for the second weekend in a row as their automatic promotion hopes suffered another blow at the hands of Walsall at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Rovers made the worst possible start when Andy Butler headed the visitors ahead inside two minutes.

Billy Paynter restored parity just past the quarter hour when he pounced from close range after Chris Brown had headed towards goal.

Rovers had a number of chances to go ahead in the second half with David Cotterill going closest when his dipping shot from the edge of the area came back off the bar and Rob Jones could only put the rebound wide.

Walsall made Rovers pay for the missed chances when Febian Brandy was able to cut in from the left far too easily before firing his shot past Gary Woods.

Despite the defeat, Rovers remain joint top with Tranmere also losing for the second weekend in a row at Leyton Orient.

The chasing pack are closing in with Swindon and Bournemouth now just one point behind.

Rovers have a chance to go top in midweek when they welcome MK Dons to the Keepmoat.
