Doncaster Rovers progressed to the second round of the Capital One League Cup after beating York City on penalties.

The Rovers squad showed just how thin it is when manager Dean Saunders could only name four substitutes for the game.

York have returned to the Football League this season after an eight year absence and they looked like pulling off a shock after taking the lead halfway through the second half.

Michael Coulson cut inside from the right to fire a left foot shot past Gary Woods in the Rovers goal.

Chris Brown equalised for Rovers soon afterwards from the penalty spot following a foul on David Cotterill in the penalty area.

The game went into extra time with neither side able to find a winner.

Rovers went through thanks to successful spot kicks from Chris Brown, Kyle Bennett, Martin Woods and Robbie Blake. York goalscorer Martin Coulson missed the visitor`s first spot kick. Jon Challinor and Michael Potts converted before Matty Blair missed to seal Rovers progression in the competition.

The draw for the second round will take place on Wednesday evening.
