Doncaster Rovers gifted new Northampton Town manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink the perfect start as they were caught napping from the off at the Sixfields Stadium.

Northampton went ahead inside 25 seconds when Matt Crooks steered the ball home after George Smith had got in behind the Doncaster defence and it proved to be the crucial moment in the game as Northampton held on to pick up their first points of the season.

Doncaster struggled to get a foothold back in the game in the opening half and Crooks, who had opened the scoring, wasted chances to increase the lead for the home side.

Doncaster improved in the second half following the arrival of James Coppinger but they could not find a way past Matt Ingram in the Northampton goal.

Coppinger forced Ingram into a good low save and in the closing seconds, he kept out a Ben Whiteman effort at full stretch.

It was another disappointing afternoon for Doncaster, who have now failed to score in their last three league games.
