Doncaster Rovers missed a great chance to climb above their South Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United in a dramatic last ten minutes at the Keepmoat.

Rovers looked to be cruising to three crucial points, thanks to a goal in each half from Billy Paynter and David Syers.

The game turned with ten minutes remaining when Nick Blackman pulled a goal back from the penalty spot.

Paynter then saw red

United had the first chance of the afternoon when Tony McMahon`s free kick forced Gary Woods into a good save.

Paynter gave Rovers the lead from the penalty spot on 18 minutes when David Syers was brought down in the area by United goalkeeper George Long.

Syers should have increased Rovers lead in the first half but he somehow managed to head wide from close range.

Rovers came close to doubling their lead in the first minute of the second half when Iain Hume saw his effort come back of a post and Geoff Long in the United goal denied David Cotterill from the follow up.

Syers doubled Rovers lead on 65 minutes when he headed home a David Cotterill free kick for his third goal in the last three games.

United got a way back into the game with just ten minutes remaining when substitute Andy Griffin gave away a penalty after a foul on Joe Ironside.

Nick Blackman stepped up to score from the spot.

With less than five minutes remaining, Paynter turned from hero to villain for Rovers when he was shown a straight red card when he was adjudged to kick Tony McMahon.

Rovers were made to pay when Dave Kitson kept up his good record against Rovers when he scored from close range with just one minute remaining.
