Doncaster Rovers secured their first home win in six games thanks to an early Billy Paynter penalty at the Keepmoat.

Rovers boss Dean Saunders made a number of changes to the side beaten at home by Preston North End in midweek and he was enforced into two changes at the centre of the Rovers defence.

Shelton Martis and James Husband replacing the injured Jamie McCombe and the suspended Rob Jones.

The only goal of the game came after four minutes. David Cotterill was fouled inside the area and Paynter gave Chris Weale in the Shrewsbury goal no chance from the spot.

Rovers thought they had doubled their lead before half time when David Syers hooked in from a tight angle but the assistant referee had his flag up for offside.

Shrewsbury came into the game more in the second half and Marvin Morgan missed their best chance when he headed wide from close range.

A crucial three points for Rovers that lifts them into tenth place in League One. Rovers are just three points behind fourth place, with a game in hand on the sides above them.

  • With Rob suspended I thought Shelton did a fine job in the air, (I think his ball distribution can be better than Rob`s) after a good start tension started to show in the second half, then we got what has been missing for the last two seasons, a bit of good luck! hope this carries us through for a while until they can blend and start to relax.
