Doncaster Rovers won for the first time on the road this season with a tight 1-0 win at South Yorkshire neighbours Sheffield Wednesday.

On loan Manchester United striker Federico Macheda made it three goals in three appearances since arriving from Old Trafford earlier this month as he headed the only goal of the game with just nineteen minutes remaining.

The home side, who are still to win this season, enjoyed the better of the game with striker Atdhe Nuhiu having the best chances.

Nuhiu fired wide in the first half after a mistake by Rob Jones and the same player denied Nuhiu with a goal-line clearance in the second half.

Jones was returning to his former club and he came closest to give the visitors the lead when he headed just wide.

Rovers goalkeeper Ross Turnbull then did well to keep out a goal bound effort from Miguel Llera and they were made to pay for their missed chances when Macheda headed home from close range after a good ball into the middle by James Coppinger.

Paul Keegan then headed off the line to maintain the Rovers lead as the visitors started to run out of ideas.

Richie Wellens almost doubled the lead for Rovers late in the game when Chris Kirkland saved his low shot after a well-worked free kick.

Mark Duffy almost capped a superb away win for Rovers when his shot from 60-yards drifted just wide after Wednesday keeper Kirkland had come forward for a corner.

The win for Rovers pulls them five points clear of the relegation places and they now prepare for a home game against inform Burnley on Tuesday night.
