Doncaster Rovers boss Darren Ferguson isn`t ruling out a deal to bring former favourite Paul Green back to the Keepmoat.

Green was a surprise inclusion in the Doncaster side for their opening pre-season game at Rossington Main on Tuesday night.

The 33-year-old is without a club following his release by South Yorkshire neighbours Rotherham United at the end of last season and whilst Ferguson admits Green is just with Doncaster to maintain his fitness whilst he finds a club, he will not rule out a deal to keep him with the club.

“He`s definitely one to consider,” Ferguson told the Doncaster Free Press.

“I`m not ruling it out, but I`m not saying it`s definite. He`s only training with us at the moment.

“I have to make sure it`s the right decision, not in terms of the type of lad he is or the quality he`s got, but if he fits into it numbers-wise in terms of positional areas on the pitch.

“If we did do it, it might be a slightly different Paul Green to what we`ve seen before in terms of where he would play.

“His game has slightly changed. Greeny`s always been a bit of a runner, he runs from deep and gets goals.

“He could still do that but on Tuesday he sat in front of the back four and he`s a good player – everyone knows that.

“He`s got a great attitude and I`ve enjoyed working with him, so we`ll see.

“He`s a fans` favourite. He`s definitely given me a lot to think about.

“The average age of the squad has gone down quite a bit but when you get senior pros like him and Coppinger and Butler, you can`t have enough of them.”

The former Republic of Ireland international starting his career with Doncaster and he opened the scoring for the side when they won the Conference Play-off final in 2003.

He was an integral part of the Doncaster midfielder that won promotion from League Two and League One and he made 277 appearances for the club before leaving to join Derby County in the summer of 2008.

He has now made over 500 career appearances that have also seen him have spells at Leeds United and Ipswich Town.
