Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was full of praise for Doncaster Rovers after they push the Premier League giants all the way in the Carabao Cup fourth round.

Arsenal squeezed past Doncaster 1-0 thanks to a first half strike from Theo Walcott.

Doncaster defended heroically in the opening half of the game but in the second half they created a number of chances and they almost forced the game into extra-time late in the game when firstly, Liam Mandeville saw his effort deflected just wide and from the resulting corner, Matty Blair saw his header tipped onto the crossbar.

Wenger praised the fitness of the League One side after the game in his post-match interview.

“I would say they played very well,” Wenger told Sky Sports .

“This is what has changed in the lower divisions – first of all everybody is super fit.

“There is absolute total fitness.

“They were well organised, they came and gave us a tough time.

“They never showed any weakness mentally and they kept going until the end.

“They could have a scored a goal as well.

“I must say I was surprised by their quality and their level.

“They shouldn`t be too concerned about staying in their league.

“They need to adapt because they just came up but they have enough to stay in the league for me.”

Doncaster can now concentrate on ending their poor run in League One having gone six games without a win.

They make the long trip to Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.
