Doncaster entertained Preston hoping to secure three more points which would guarantee safety in the Championship.

Rovers made three changes from the side that beat Ipswich at the Weekend, Van Nieuwstadt, Guy and Hayter replaced Lockwood, Heffernan and Spicer

Ex Rovers striker Chris Brown was in the starting line up for Preston and opened the scoring halfway through the half with a powerful header after Rovers had dominated the half.

Rovers best chance of the half fell to Shiels whose lofted effort hit the post with Hayter somehow failing to tap in from close range.

In a fairly even second half the game was put beyond doubt after 72 minutes when Mellor found himself in space inside the area and beat Sullivan to double Preston`s lead.

With clubs at the bottom picking up points again Rovers will once again be looking over their shoulder with three games remaining.
