Doncaster Rovers manager Darren Ferguson is looking to guarantee promotion as quickly as possible.

Doncaster are now 16 points clear of the play-off places with just 27 points to play for this season following their 3-1 win against Notts County on Tuesday evening.

With second placed Plymouth Argyle dropping points following their 1-1 draw at Wycombe Wanders, they now have a six-point cushion at the top and Ferguson was delighted to extend the gap at the top of the table whilst moving a step closer to promotion.

“The quicker you do it the better for everyone, it’s a big gap and we want to maintain the gap at the top to second and we have managed to extend it, which is a big bonus,” Ferguson told BBC Radio Sheffield .

‘It’s looking good but no one is getting carried away.’

Portsmouth remain third in the table following their comprehensive 4-0 win over Grimsby Town but it was a bad night for those just outside the automatic promotion places.

Third placed Stevenage were beaten 1-0 at Blackpool whilst Carlisle United and Luton Town, who were fifth and sixth respectively before kick-off, shared the points in a 0-0 draw.
