Doncaster Rovers boss Darren Ferguson says a deal to bring Chelsea midfielder Jordan Houghton to the club on a permanent deal is close.

Houghton is due to return to Chelsea following the game at Peterborough United today after spending the first half of the season on loan at the Keepmoat.

The 22-year-old is in his second loan spell at the Keepmoat after a successful loan last season. Houghton played a pivotal part in Doncaster`s promotion campaign before an injury brought a premature end to his loan in February.

He returned to the Keepmoat in August after recovering from the injury, he has once again impressed in the Doncaster midfield, and his appearance against Rochdale on Friday was his 57th for the club in his two spells.

The midfielder is out of contract at Stamford Bridge in the summer and Ferguson is hoping to turn the loan deal into a permanent deal.

“We`re getting there with Jordan,” Ferguson told The Sheffield Star.

“I think we`re quite close.”

As well as Houghton, Ben Whiteman and Rodney Kongolo are due to return to their parent clubs after the trip to Peterborough today.

The duo have been regulars for Doncaster this season since arriving in August and Ferguson is keen to sort out new deals for the duo first before looking at any other players.

“I`m concentrating on getting the ones we`ve got on loan for the rest of the season,” Ferguson continued.

“Then we`ll see what happens.

“There`s one or two players that I`m interested in but a lot of clubs are interested in players at this time of the season.

“There`s a price. If there`s a lot of clubs after one certain player it can be difficult. “

I would say that if there`s going to be any movement, it wouldn`t be the early part of January.

“We`ll have to see and assess what goes out and what might be available.

“Certainly I wouldn`t be looking at changing too much.”

Doncaster start 2018 with good momentum after finishing last year with three straight wins. Doncaster are also still in the FA Cup and a good run in the competition could give Ferguson more money to work with in this transfer window.
