Doncaster Rovers boss Paul Dickov felt the 4-1 scoreline at Reading was harsh on his side who he felt looked most likely to score until losing Rob Jones through injury with just over fifteen minutes remaining.
The loss of Jones left Rovers down to ten-men after using all three of their substitutes. It was a cruel blow for Rovers who were still well in the game at 2-1 at the time of his withdrawal.
Dickov felt they looked the more likely side to score until losing Jones.
Speaking on Radio Sheffield, Dickov said, “Reading came out the blocks really fast and went ahead.
“We changed things around with the substitution, we got back into the game and we were disappointed to go in at half time behind because we created a lot of chances in the final twenty minutes of the first half.
“We were still in the game, it was even and we felt we could get an equaliser and come away with a result.
“We made positive substitutions and it is sods-law that we then lose Rob Jones through injury and they then picked us off.”
Reading raced ahead after just eleven minutes when Danny Guthrie fired into the roof of the net with Ross Turnbull out of position.
The home side dominated the first twenty minutes and only a fantastic save on the line by Turnbull stopped Reading doubling their lead.
Dickov changed things around half way through the first half, bringing on striker Theo Robinson in place of midfielder Dean Furman and Rovers started to take control of the game.
Robinson brought Rovers level just past the half hour when he smashed home after Adam Federici kept out a Mark Duffy free kick.
With Rovers continuing to threaten, the dangerous Jonathan Obita was using his pace to hit Rovers on the break. It was his break from his own half that eventually found Adam Le Fondre, who coolly finished, restoring the lead for Reading with just six minutes remaining of the first half.
Rovers continued to look for a way through the Reading defence in the second half and with Dickov looking for an equaliser and having used all three substitutes, it was a cruel blow for them when Rob Jones collided with a post and left the field with a suspected broken arm.
The loss of Jones proved crucial and with Reading adding more pace in attack with the introduction of Hal Robson-Kanu, they gave themselves some breathing space when Gareth McCleary fired home.
Pavel Pogrebnyak smashed home a fourth deep into stoppage time to make the score 4-1, a scoreline that was harsh on Rovers efforts during the game.
