After Ipswich Town boss Paul Jewell reported last week that he was going to make another bid for Doncaster Rovers striker Billy Sharp in January, his chief executive Simon Clegg says the money is available for him to strengthen his squad.
Ipswich have just announced a pre-tax profit of £136,000 for twelve months up to June 2011, after losses of £14 and £10 million in the previous two seasons.
Speaking on BBC Radio Suffolk, Clegg said: ‘If Paul needs to bring in additional players and can convince the owner he has identified the players at the right price, then support will be there.’
Jewell was unsuccessful in a joint bid of £2.6 million in the summer for Rovers duo Billy Sharp (£2.3m) and James Coppinger(£300,000).
Rovers did accept an offer from Southampton in excess of £3 million that triggered a clause in Sharp`s contract that allowed him to talk to other clubs.
Sharp declined the offer from Southampton, preferring to stay with Rovers.
Last week Jewell said in an interview that he was ready to make a move once again for Sharp in January.
Speaking last week, Jewell said, ‘Doncaster will have to accept an offer because Billy Sharp has got a clause in his contract.
If a club meets that valuation, they have to give him permission to speak.
We`d like to have him here.
There`s no hiding from the fact we tried to get him in the summer because he`s a quality Championship player – he might even be Premier League standard.
I know Billy was interested in coming here in the summer so we`ll see what happens.’
Sharp has eighteen months left on his current contract at Rovers.
