Doncaster Rovers worrying form continued with a 2-0 home defeat to Portsmouth.

Rovers have now slipped to 16th in the Championship having only picked up seven points from eight games so far this year.

Portsmouth won thanks to goals either side of half time by Dave Kitson and Joel Ward.

Rovers welcomed back James Coppinger and Matt Kilgallon after injury as some of Rovers injury hit squad started to return.

Liam Lawrence had the first real chance of the afternoon but the legs of Gary Woods saved his effort.

James Coppinger had Rovers first sight of goal but his effort from the edge of the area drifted wide of the post.

Coppinger then had another chance but Ashdown saved his effort after a good run from George Friend.

The visitors took the lead just three minutes from the break, Greg Halford saw his shot come back off the post and Dave Kitson bravely threw his head into a crowded Rovers area to score.

Portsmouth doubled their lead early in the second half when Joel Ward showed tremendous composure to lob Woods in the Rovers goal from close range.

Rovers were being frustrated and Paul Keegan saw his effort fly high, wide and handsome as they struggled to show any sign of getting back into the game.

Portsmouth were reduced to ten men in the last minute when Jonathan Hogg received his second yellow card of the afternoon for deliberate handball.

Ryan Mason had Rovers last chance of the game with Ashdown producing a good save to keep out his strike.

Another disappointing result for Rovers and they must now quickly try and clear it from their minds as they entertain Ipswich Town on Tuesday night.
